On the ground, the changes are clear. Vacant and derelict land has been transformed into vibrant greenspaces. Woodlands have been created and enhanced. Floodplains are now managed in ways that reduce flood risk while increasing biodiversity. Communities have new places to grow healthy food and local people enjoy easier access to greenspaces close to their homes. These spaces invite walking, cycling, and active travel, encouraging healthier lifestyles while creating opportunities for connection with nature.  

But the CSGN story goes deeper than individual projects. Forums and working groups have brought together local authorities, community organisations, and national agencies. Through shared training and knowledge exchange, capacity has grown across local authorities and within communities themselves. Communities have been empowered to co-design and take ownership of projects that matter most to them, building skills, capacity and leadership.

Resources are shared across organisations, leading to more preventative spending, institutional reform and innovation in both local government and agency management. The CSGN has also shaped policy. The CSGN is now embedded in the National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4) and aligned with the government’s National Performance Framework. Being anchored in a statutory instrument has provided the leverage and commitment to action within local development plans and agency strategies. With CSGN principles incorporated into local authority development plans, ensure that greenspaces, biodiversity, and climate resilience are not add-ons but central to the way places are planned and regenerated. The CSGN is an important element for the successful implementation across multiple policy areas.

The Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN), has for 15 years made an impact on the people and the land. Changing a once industrial area, with social and economic challenges, to one where the benefits of nature were the inspiration for renewal. This meant weaving multiple layers and integrating stories through different yet interconnected parts of community life. Work, family, travel, health, social justice, environmental renewal, greenspaces, are all improved through the vision of the CSGN.  

It is this complexity of interactions and interconnectedness that is reflected in the design and navigation of this website. It tells the stories arising from the CSGN, and like those stories it is not a linear route.
